Mural in Val-des-Bois
A grand tribute to the era of the log drivers
In Val-des-Bois, a striking mural catches the eye and tells a significant chapter of the region’s history. Created entirely using spray paint by artist Maria-Rosa Szychowska, this impressive work depicts the Lièvre River, the Highfall Dam, and a log-driving scene, just as it would have been experienced over 60 years ago. It depicts log drivers at work on the logs, in the midst of a rushing river, in a luminous and energetic composition.
Beyond its technical prowess and meticulous details, the mural evokes a deeply rooted collective memory—that of the craftsmanship and way of life that have shaped the region. It also recalls significant milestones, including the suspension of log driving in 1964 and the end of timber floating in 1994.
In a touching detail, the central figure represents the artist’s father, adding an intimate dimension to this public painting.
