Parc Oméga
Successful inter-species cohabitation between goats and foxes!
The Rocky Mountain goats, already present at Parc Omega for several years, have recently had their habitat enriched. The silver fox has also made its appearance at the park, and they now share their living quarters!
Of the same genetic make-up as the red fox, the silver fox is less widespread. It can be distinguished by its coat, which can vary from complete black to blue, gray or ash-gray, but the tip of its tail is always white.
This North American mammal belongs to the canid family, like the coyote and wolf, which can also be found on the park's 2200-acre territory.
Especially in children's stories, the fox has been portrayed as cunning and deceitful, when in fact it is shy, discreet and nervous.
Although carnivorous, at Parc Omega it shares its territory with Rocky Mountain goats. They have nothing to fear, since they can weigh more than 25 times as much as a fox, and this canid hunts only small mammals such as mice, squirrels and rabbits.
Like all the species in the park, these animals live in their natural environment. The fox, which lives on the ground, needs to be able to dig burrows, unlike the Rocky Mountain goat, which loves heights and spends most of its time climbing rocks. We find each of these biotopes in their territory, which is thus well shared.
What a joy to see them interact and live together!
