Manoir Papineau National Historic Site
Description
The Manoir Papineau National Historic Site welcomes you!
This uniquely beautiful site, overlooking the Outaouais River, is a page straight out of 19th-century history opening right before your eyes: the grand seigneurial estate of Louis-Joseph Papineau, the man who was to become a leading figure in Canadian politics. The manor, the estate, and the outbuildings reflect the social ambitions, the tastes and the personality of the man who, after leaving the forefront of political life, dedicated himself to developing his seigneury. Many of the period outbuildings attest, even now, to the greatness of the seigneurial estate, among them the family museum, the granary, the funeral chapel where lie six generations of Papineaus, the tea house and a rustic bell tower.
Visiting Manoir Papineau National Historic Site is like leaping back in time. It’s taking the time to observe, to breathe deeply, and to let the surroundings surprise us. This site stands at the heart of an incredibly beautiful natural setting. Surrender to the charm of the bright colours and sweet fragrances of the garden inspired by the picturesque landscape of the English-style gardens.
