Papineauville, December 8, 2023 - This book was written by a collective of authors to mark the 200th anniversary of the common mill in the Petite-Nation seigneury. It tells the story of the development of a community of pioneers around this not-so-ordinary mill. Through these pages, we discover, in broad strokes, the history of colonization in the Outaouais' only seigneury, and follow the mill's fate, from its construction in 1822 to its disuse and demolition some 150 years later.
Still inhabited, the miller's house, facing the Moulin-Seigneurial-Papineau park in the heart of Papineauville, and a few remnants of the vanished mill remain today the only witnesses to this landmark era in the history of Papineauville, and the Petite-Nation. A collective of authors, Maurice Deschênes, Özgen Eryaşa, Alain Faubert, Nicole Hébert, Pierre-Louis Lapointe, Claire Leblanc and Jean-Guy Paquin retrace the various facets of the history of this water mill and its importance in the emergence of a community. Among other things, the authors discuss the ups and downs of mill construction, the workings of the various types of flour mill and the end of the seigniorial regime. They also list the various owners and millers who succeeded each other in the post-seigniorial era, so that you might find the life story of a close or distant relative!
"The flour mill has great sentimental and heritage value for me. I've known it, I've seen it. It's still part of my life; it's in my backyard, on my street. It will always be in my heart," says Claire Leblanc, co-author of the book Un Moulin disparu - Le moulin banal de la seigneurie de la Petite-Nation, Éditions du Comité culturel de Papineauville, 2023, ISBN 978-2-9820099-3-6, $40.
